Sorprendiendo a muchos, aunque a otros no tanto, Breaking bad se quedó con los premios principales en los Emmy –incluyendo mejor serie dramática, actor principal y de reparto, actriz de reparto y guión-, superando al otro gran favorito, True detective, que se quedó con las manos casi vacías, con la excepción del galardón a la mejor dirección.
Algo similar ocurrió en la categoría de comedia, donde Modern family confirmó su peso, aún enfrentando a Orange is the new black, que venía con gran respaldo y que muchos avizoraban como la posible gran triunfadora. Sin embargo, la serie de Netflix no pudo hacer pie.
En el apartado de las miniseries y películas para televisión no hubo grandes sorpresas: Fargo se consagró como mejor miniserie y The normal heart como mejor película, tal como se esperaba.
